New WHYY Television Series Filming in Greater Philadelphia Area
Crystalline Studios produces comedy segments for “Articulate with Jim Cotter”

Norristown, PA – December 29, 2014 –  A crew of Philadelphia area film professionals is filming this week at ACPPA Community Arts Center for the new WHYY Series Articulate with Jim Cotter.

WHYY’s new arts magazine presents stories with a fresh perspective, while showing how the arts speak to the world in their everyday lives. The show will explore the variety, quality and heritage of creativity in our region and beyond, with longtime arts journalist, Jim Cotter, as a guide.

The principal documentary and magazine portion of the series will be produced by Panavista Pictures, a Philadelphia-area independent production company specializing in documentary projects. Comedy segments within the episodes will be produced by Crystalline Studios, under their narrative fiction banner Cinevore.

Since 2005, Crystalline Studos’ projects have primarily spanned the worlds of non-profits, arts, culture, and government. Their clients include Longwood Gardens, The Municipality of Norristown, and SEPTA. Until recently, most of their videos were commercial spots, industrials, and live event documentation.

It was only in 2012, while producing Nerd vs. Geek – a webseries about three nerdy social circles becoming roommates via Craigslist – that the Crystalline team began to receive attention for its narrative fiction through Cinevore.

“We started to get phone calls offering us opportunities to make more original content, with our own concepts and scripts,” says Michael Licisyn, Crystalline Studios Director of Photography.

Cinevore, previously a strictly in-house production company, was first commissioned for service work by Red 5 Studios to write and produce four viral gamer-trope videos to promote FireFall – Dialogue Tree, Limit Break, Supervillian Security Solutions, and BioHazards. The videos received about 500,000 views combined. Shortly thereafter, the team was hired by Shout! Factory to produce segments for the 2013 & 2014 Mystery Science Theater 3000 Turkey Day marathon, a day-long stream of episodes of the cult favorite show, hosted by show creator Joel Hodgson.

This latest commission came straight from the source: Jim Cotter, Philadelphia arts and culture reporter for WRTI, and showrunner/host of the new WHYY series Articulate. “Mr. Cotter called and said he enjoyed Nerd vs. Geek, so he wanted to give us an opportunity to write our particular brand of smart comedy as a segment in his show,” says Crystalline Studios director/writer, Matt Conant.

“It’s a dream come true,” says Crystalline Studios writer/producer Stephanie Yuhas. “Working on Articulate combines our love of arts and culture with our love of comedy. We were made for this project.”

Articulate will air on WHYY-TV Thursdays at 10:30 pm beginning January 8.

On Tuesday, January 6, WHYY will host a FREE private screening of the series before its January 8 premiere on WHYY-TV. Attendees will enjoy a live performance and conversation with the Articulate team in this celebration of arts and culture in the Greater Philadelphia region and beyond.
